A while ago, during a Christmas get together, my cousin brought a board game called "Flip Ship". This game is super fun, interactive, basically if Space Invaders or Galaga
were a board game, this game was it.
The most entertaining feature of this game was in the name alone... "Flip Ship"...Sounds an awful lot like "Flip Sh!*", doesn't it?
Do you know how many name variations we had for our ships?
Chicken Ship
Bull Ship
Holy Ship
Dip Ship
The Ship
The list goes on....
Much to my cousin's disappointment, we went on and on with the joke, talking a lot "ship" to the other players, etc.
Fast forward to motherhood... my son (3 years old mind you) knows some "not so nice" words (I blame daddy hehe), including "Sh!*". Of course, we have had some correction take place on what should be said in it's place.
However, true to family form, our son has learned to replace "Sh!*" with "Ship" - I honestly have no idea who taught him this substitution. Oh the double takes I have here and there when I hear my little by say "Oh ship!" Even our oldest daughter (who is 4) tattles on the kid, who is not actually saying anything bad.
Needless to say, we have had to explain why we don't say those words. Right or wrong, our tactic has been not to make a HUGE fuss over the word itself, but to explain how it hurts feelings, is not nice, and can make people angry. I don't know, maybe this is good, maybe this is a terrible strategy. I do hope that my kiddos grow into the good, kind, smart, well rounded adults that every parent wants their children to be.
